Sherman Firefly

$7.00

This is a 3D printed Sherman Firefly tank from the WW2 era. The Sherman Firefly was a highly effective British modification of the American M4 Sherman tank during World War II, created to counter powerful German tanks like the Panther and Tiger by replacing the standard 75mm gun with the formidable British 17-pounder anti-tank gun. This long-barreled weapon gave the Firefly exceptional armor-piercing capability—able to penetrate the frontal armor of heavy German tanks at typical combat ranges with APCBC rounds (and even more with rarer APDS ammunition)—making it one of the few Allied tanks that could reliably engage Panthers and Tigers head-on rather than depending solely on numbers or flanking tactics. The distinctive extended barrel and massive muzzle flash when firing earned it the evocative nickname Firefly, while modifications included a cramped turret redesign (no coaxial machine gun, relocated radio bustle), blanked pistol ports, and adjusted ammunition storage. Entering service in mid-1944 during the Normandy campaign, around 2,100–2,200 were converted (mostly on M4A4 chassis as Sherman VC and some M4 as IC), and Allied crews prized them highly but often concealed them to avoid becoming priority targets once the Germans learned to spot the long gun. Retaining the Sherman's reliability, decent mobility, and logistical advantages, the Firefly's thin armor still left it vulnerable to German high-velocity fire, so tactics emphasized ambush positions, hull-down deployment, and teamwork with standard Shermans. Ultimately, its outstanding firepower made the Firefly the most potent Allied tank destroyer of the late European campaign—a brilliant, urgently needed improvisation that became legendary until more advanced designs arrived later in the war.
